Q: Can I use the XT9 Prosthetic Knee for everyday use?

A: One of the things that allows the XT9 prosthetic knee to make so many sports possible is that it is designed specifically for sports. It is possible to walk with the XT9 but you wouldn't want to use it as an every day prosthesis. That would be almost like walking in ski boots all day, because the XT9 is much stiffer than a walking leg and it has dynamic extension return. This means that it will always return to a straightened position which is why it works well for snowboarding, skiing and other activities. The knee will bend, allowing it to absorb shock and move dynamically for proper turning and stance on a board or skis, but unlike any other knee, it won't just collapse and leave you kneeling in the snow. The XT9 will spring back as if you had quadriceps still connected to your lower limb. You will be able to walk into the ski lodge for lunch and through the parking lot from your car to the slope just fine, but the XT9 is designed to be interchangeable with your walking knee so you can quickly switch knees for sports use while wearing the same socket. You will find that this can usually be done faster than your friends switch from their shoes to their boots.
The XT9 will also allow you to participate in many other sports such as wakeboarding, surfing and other water sports and rock climbing just to name a few. You will find that your everyday hardware will stay in better condition for longer as well because the XT9 will take the beatings of your activities sparing the hardware you rely on for everyday use.

Q: Is the XT9 heavy?

A: At 986 grams the XT9 is one of the lightest prosthetic knees on the market!  It also has a very high strength rating for how light it is.  We were able to accomplish this by using the same technology and materials used on military fighter jets like the F-16.  It's part of our commitment to bringing you the best sports prosthesis possible that drives us to reach for the highest standards possible.

Q: Is the XT9 Prosthetic Knee water proof?

A: Yes!  The XT9 has been designed to hold up under every condition.  Unlike most prosthetic limbs, the XT9 is made entirely of corrosion resistant materials such as Titanium, Aluminum and Stainless Steel.  Whether you need a stable limb for fly fishing in the middle of a fast moving river, catching air on a wakeboard, or for surfing the perfect wave, we fully warranty the XT9 for use in water sports!

Q: What components are recommended for use with the XT9 prosthetic knee?

A: We recommend using "American Prosthetics Components" couplings and attachments with your XT9 prosthetic knee.  All components from American Prosthetic Components are warranted for five years and have the highest strength ratings in the market.  We have been very happy with their products.  You can visit their web site by clicking here.
Some activities made possible by the XT9 Knee for AK amputees benefit greatly from the use of a pivoting ankle made by Rampro.  This ankle improves skiing and swimming by allowing a more natural movement of the prosthetic ankle and foot in certain situations.  To learn more click here to visit Rampro directly.   Check with Rampro on their recomendations for compatible feet.
We like the feet made by College Park Industries for active aplications.  These feet are inovative, durable and great for high activity use.  You can check them out here.
